The Role of Insects in Mechanical Transmission of Human Parasites
نویسنده
چکیده
Dear Editor, Arthropods are probably the most successful of all animals. They are found in every type of habitat and in all regions of the world. Without the vector, the parasite life cycle would be broken and the pathogen would die. By understanding how a parasite is transmitted and the involvement of vectors in the transmission, public health personnel can better design and manage control program for particular problem. Just because an arthropod feeds on a diseased host does not ensure that it can become infected, nor does it ensure that ingested pathogens can survive and develop. In mechanical transmission, the insects transport organisms on body parts, and setae that collect contamination as insect feed on dead animals or excrement. In biological transmission, there is either multiplication or development of the parasite in the arthropod or both. Flies have been shown to act as vectors for a number of pathogens (Figure 1). Transmission of pathogens by adult flies occurs by (i) Mechanical dislodgement from their exoskeleton that is used for adherence to vertical surfaces, (ii) Fecal deposition, and (iii) The regurgitation of incompletely digested food. Some insects infect man directly and some indirectly.

[The role of insects (Blattodea, Diptera, and Hymenoptera) as possible mechanical vectors of helminths in the domiciliary and peridomiciliary environment].
Helminths can be transmitted to human beings in several ways, but little attention has been given to vector or mechanical transmission of infective forms by insects. The present study surveys the helminth species present in three orders of insects that coexist in proximity with the human environment. A total of 700 insects (54 Blattodea, 275 Diptera, and 371 Hymenoptera) were collected and exam...

Monkeys are important experimental models for investigating human diseases. The aim of this study was to survey the alimentary tract parasites among imported vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) to Iran. Fecal samples were collected from 40 vervets imported from Tanzania to Razi Vaccine and Serum Research Institute of Iran. Fecal samples were assessed by direct smear and Telman sedimentation...
متن کاملMechanical transmission of human protozoan parasites by insects.
The filthy breeding habits, feeding mechanisms, and indiscriminate travel between filth and food make some groups of synanthropic insects such as nonbiting flies and cockroaches efficient vectors of human enteric protozoan parasites. Twenty-one species of filth flies have been listed by regulatory agencies concerned with sanitation and public health as causative agents of gastrointestinal disea...
متن کاملThe role of cockroaches and flies in mechanical transmission of medical important parasites
Arthropods can be found on human or animals as ecto-parasites. Vectors can contaminate stored foods and transmit illness, or introduce diseases in new areas. Pet species facilitating infestations, and different risk factors related to infestation were identified. To determine the possible role of insects in dissemination of medically important parasites, study was carried out in residential are...
